The Key– A Review

I wanna tell you a story. It’s not a new story, you’ve probably heard one like it before, but this is a story that needs told regardless. This story has several sides, so I’m just gonna pick one and go from there.

Once upon a time there was this guy. He needed money, and he had some connections, so he was able to get a post as an orderly in an asylum. This guy, let’s call him B decided he liked this job he didn’t actually have to do much work, and he was in a position of power over the patients. Time goes by, and B wants more money, so he starts making deals behind the doctor’s back. B sees to the silencing of mistresses daughters and such, then uses their bodies for his own sadistic gratification. He rapes them, beats them, tortures them with unnecessary medication and procedures. He arranges for all of the other asylum employees to have a taste of the girls’ flesh whenever they want it until one day…

A man, D, he wants money, but he doesn’t want to work for it. He marries an heiress with two daughters. D tells his new wife he loves her, but he has to because she controls the purse strings. The new Mrs. D says it’s love, but she doesn’t quite trust him, so she makes a will. D knows about the will, but being a cocky son-of-a-bitch, and thinks even if he doesn’t get the whole pie he’ll at least get a sizeable portion, after all he’s her husband, right? And then Mrs. D dies. Did he kill her, we don’t know, all we know is she’s gone leaving this sick fuck with her two daughters 15 and 12. D opens the seal on his wife’s will, and finds he gets nothing. The cunt left everything to the two Mini-cunts! That bitch. In that instant D decides he will get even. He sees 15 cross in front of his office door and decides she will be his revenge. He tears after her, and she runs. She makes it to her room but can’t close the door before D has ripped her top open. She fights him, having nowhere else to run, and D, drunk decides she’s not worth the fight, so he’ll go somewhere he doesn’t have to fight, where he’ll be strong enough to overpower his revenge. D locks 15 in her room, and goes across the hall to 12’s room. She’s too small to fight. 15 has to protect 12, she clambers out her window, shinnies down the drainpipe, goes back into the house, finds her father’s .45. 15 intends to kill D with every fiber of her being, but she’s never fired a weapon before and she misses. Instead of saving 12, 15 has killed her. She drops the gun, and runs, but D catches her. He takes her to an asylum, where he pays B extra to forge documents to have 15 lobotomized when the Surgeon comes back.

Now in any other story, this is where the bad guys win. But not in this story. NOT in my story. See in my story, this is where 15 spits in the face of the men who seek to control her. She rises above herself, and brings her four friends with her. Together they find the strength to fight, to resist, to win. They seek five items, only knowing four. A map, fire, a knife, and a key. First they lose R. She sacrifices herself so that her sister can go free. Then A blabs their plan and she and O are killed by B. This leaves only 15 and S.

By now, this probably sounds really familiar, especially to those of you who love movies. The critics panned it. One thing I can say about them is that they are mostly men.

Nowhere in this film are the girls nude, and in the most sexual moments, the dances are turned into beautifully choreographed fight sequences. Sex is hinted at, but never shown. The cinematography found in this film exemplary, but what else are we to expect from cinematic genius like Zack Snyder? I find this to be a film that is not only beautiful, but one that speaks to women of all ages. It says “no matter what you think of yourself, you ARE strong enough.” All that is left is that you find the strength within yourself to keep fighting. The critics say this is sexualization
of women at its worst. They say it was boring. I* say, they* are crusty old assholes and this movie was too damn smart for them.

You have all you need to win. Now fight.

This film is Sucker Punch.

About Navah Vesper Anat Yehudit

I am an avid fan of the Ballet, am expanding my tastes in Opera and all all Classical Arts. I enjoy Japanese art, needle craft, crochet, knitting, and though my past-times are old-fashioned, and some of my ideas are, that isn't necessarily a bad thing in this age of progress for the sake of progress.
