That’s right, I said it.  The reason for my putting it as the title of this article is because off the new edition of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.  That book uses the word “nigger” over 200 times.  It’s an offensive word that has been used to degrade a race of people.  It is a word that those very same people now use to empower themselves.  Nigger, faggot, slut, bitch, homo, kike, mick, kraut, jap, cracker, honkey, whore, gook, nip.  All of these are offensive words that have been used at one time or another to degrade people.  However, they are just words.  George Carlin was right when he said that “the same words that can hurt can heal.”  We just have to give it time.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrD6k8PDr1o

So what is the big deal about changing “nigger” to “slave” in Huck Finn?  I’ll use a couple of different references here so you can understand.  The first is The Bible.  Let’s change G-d to Diety so that way it’s all inclusive and not just for Judeo-Christians.  Remove all of the alcohol from the works of P.G. Wodehouse.  Call him Moby Richard instead.  Have The Illiad and The Odyssey reworked so that only Judeo-Christian beliefs are reflected.  Better yet, how about we just say screw all and get rid of the whole damned system.  We’ll just burn books we don’t like because that’s what fascists do.

Keeping the word “nigger” in the book is important because it raises awareness.  It also shows the time period it was written in, as well as the mentality of the time period.  If you pay close attention, not once is the word used in the narrative.  Instead, it is used only in dialogue.  Twain was writing to show the ignorance of people, and for the publishers of the newest edition to take the word out, they are only proving his point.

One Response to “NIGGER”

  1. Scott Heydt says:

Well put and right on the money. The word in the context of the novel is not meant to bring the reader down but to raise the reader up in his/her awareness. Books like this are banned or edited because some are afraid to admit that humanity’s choices aren’t always the stuff of fairy tales.
